The Legendary Puissance – A London International Horse Show Tradition
One of the most thrilling spectacles in equestrian sport, the iconic Puissance that we know and love today has a history that stretches back more than a century. For fans of horses, showjumping and unforgettable sporting moments, it remains one of the highlights of the London International Horse Show and one of the most exciting things to do in London at Christmas.
The origins of the Puissance can be traced back to the 1900 Paris Olympic Games, where riders competed in an equestrian high-jump event designed to test the limits of both horse and rider. Taking its name from the French word for “power”, the Puissance has become the ultimate demonstration of courage, athleticism and partnership, earning its place as one of the most popular attractions at every London horse show.
Throughout its history, the competition has pushed competitors to new heights. In 1949, Captain Alberto Morales made history by clearing an incredible 2.47 metres, setting a world record that still stands today. It remains one of the greatest achievements ever seen in equestrian sport and a benchmark that riders continue to chase.
British showjumping legend Nick Skelton also etched his name into the record books when he cleared more than 2.30 metres at Olympia in 1978, a performance that still holds the British Puissance record. Moments like these have helped make the Puissance a must-see event for horse lovers from across the UK and beyond.
Over the decades, the challenge itself has evolved. The early sloping brush fences and timber obstacles gradually gave way to the imposing red brick wall that has become the defining image of the modern Puissance. Today, the sight of horses and riders soaring over the famous wall creates some of the most dramatic scenes in the sport and one of the standout moments of the London horse experience.
Every December, thousands of spectators gather for the London International Horse Show, one of the premier horse events in the world and a leading London event in December. Combining world-class competition, festive entertainment and unforgettable family experiences, it is a great family day out in London for visitors of all ages.
As the crowd falls silent and the wall grows ever higher, the question remains the same: will a rider and horse partnership rise to the challenge and create history once again in the International Arena? Could this be the year that a new Puissance record is set at the London Horse Show?
