From Adversity to the Spotlight: Dylan Ward’s Inspiring Journey to London International Horse Show 2026
At a charming yard in the Bedfordshire village of Keysoe, we recently spent an afternoon meeting one of the young riders who will make this year’s London International Horse Show particularly special.
Eleven-year-old Dylan Ward has earned his place in one of the Showing classes at London International Horse Show on Monday 21 December, qualifying at The Ashby Show on the 12th of July – their second ever affiliated Show!
During our visit with Dylan, and his mum Jess, we quickly discovered that horses are only one part of a story that is ultimately about overcoming adversity, embracing opportunity and never giving up on your dreams.
Meet Dylan
As a young boy, Dylan was diagnosed with bone cancer following many months of discomfort and initially being misdiagnosed. It was an unimaginably difficult time for Dylan and his family, filled with uncertainty and challenges no child should have to endure.
Throughout his treatment and recovery, riding remained a constant source of motivation and joy. While there was a period when medical professionals advised he stop riding, they later recognised the positive physical and emotional benefits it provided.
Today, Dylan rides with a passion and determination that is impossible to miss. Visiting during the school holidays, we spoke to Dylan who is a confident and engaging boy eager to talk not only about horses, but also video games, spending time with friends and all the things that make up a busy and fulfilling childhood.
Meet McFlurry
Alongside Dylan stood his trusted partner, McFlurry, the horse he will ride at London International Horse Show this December.
Their partnership is made even more fitting by the fact that McFlurry has faced his own health battles. Having undergone an operation following episodes of colic, he too has shown remarkable resilience.
We were told those experiences left him a little cautious around polos for a while. However, when a few emerged from our pockets during the visit, any hesitation seemed to disappear remarkably quickly!
Watching Dylan and McFlurry together, it is easy to see the bond they share. Both have faced challenges, both have shown incredible determination, and together they have formed a partnership built on trust, understanding and perseverance.
Trying Something New
Dressage was Dylan’s first love in the equestrian world. Since then, he has broadened his horizons, enjoying jumping and continuously developing his skills in the saddle. This year, however, he has taken on a completely new challenge: Showing.
Despite being relatively new to the discipline, Dylan has already secured qualification for London International Horse Show, demonstrating both his natural talent and willingness to step outside his comfort zone.
That adventurous spirit does not end there. This summer, Dylan will also compete in his very first Showing to Music class. His chosen soundtrack perfectly reflects the extraordinary journey he and McFlurry have been on, featuring uplifting and empowering songs including Survivor and I’m Still Standing.
The playlist tells a story of resilience, strength and optimism. Much like Dylan and McFlurry, it focuses not on what has happened in the past, but on moving forward and embracing every opportunity ahead.
Raising Awareness
For Dylan and Jess, sharing their story is about more than celebrating a competition qualification. They are passionate about raising awareness of bone cancer, particularly among children and young people, and encouraging others facing difficult circumstances to keep believing in what is possible.
Their message is simple but powerful: life can change in an instant, for better or worse, but adversity does not have to define you. Instead, they hope people can see that challenges can become motivation to pursue goals, embrace new experiences and appreciate every opportunity.
That outlook has shaped much of Dylan’s journey. Whether learning a new discipline, trying Showing to Music for the first time, or setting ambitious goals for the future, he continues to focus on what he can achieve rather than the obstacles he has faced.
Looking Ahead to Team GB Dreams
Dylan’s ambitions extend far beyond this year’s London International Horse Show. Next year, once he is old enough, he hopes to begin training towards Para Dressage, with the long-term dream of one day representing Team GB at the Paralympic Games.
It is a goal that feels entirely fitting for such a determined young rider.
Dylan rides in a specially adapted saddle designed around his individual physical needs. The tailored equipment helps ensure he can ride comfortably and perform to the very best of his ability.
Watching him ride, however, it is clear that what stands out most is not the equipment, but the skill, focus and partnership he demonstrates every time he enters the arena.
A Full Circle Moment
Competing at London International Horse Show will be particularly meaningful for Dylan’s family because the event has been part of their lives for generations. Jess has fond memories of attending the Show as a young girl with her father, returning year after year through adulthood and eventually bringing Dylan to experience the magic for himself.
Now, instead of watching from the stands, Dylan will be stepping into the spotlight, it is a truly surreal and emotional full-circle moment for the family.
Dylan himself estimates that he has attended London International Horse Show at least seven times already. Asked about his favourite attraction, the answer came immediately: the dog agility competitions. His favourite breed? A Border Collie, of course!
Before his big day in the ring, he fully intends to spend time enjoying the festive atmosphere and traditions that have made London International Horse Show such an important part of his family’s Christmas season.
A Story Worth Celebrating
Dylan’s story is unique, inspiring and deeply moving. Yet it also represents countless young people and families facing similar challenges every year. His journey reminds us of the power of perseverance, the importance of hope and the special role horses can play in supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.
When Dylan enters the arena at London International Horse Show on 21 December, he will not only be competing in a relatively new discipline – he will be celebrating how far he has come, alongside a horse who understands something about overcoming adversity too.
