One of the defining characteristics of London International Horse Show is its ability to bring together equestrian traditions from around the world through its renowned displays programme. While the Show is celebrated for its FEI World Cup^TM competitions and Showing Series, audiences return year after year for the opportunity to see extraordinary horses, riders and performers that they would rarely encounter elsewhere in the UK.

Over the decades, London International Horse Show displays have become an integral part of the visitor experience, showcasing not only exceptional horsemanship but also the many ways horses have shaped culture, history and society. From military pageantry and public service to theatre, film and equestrian artistry, the programme has consistently reflected the remarkable versatility of the horse.

Among the most celebrated performers to appear at the Show is Lorenzo, the ‘Flying Frenchman’, whose return in 2024 delighted audiences. First performing at Olympia in 1995, Lorenzo became famous for his breathtaking style of stunt riding, standing atop teams of galloping horses, clearing obstacles and demonstrating a partnership with his horses that has captivated spectators around the world. His performances remain some of the most memorable ever seen at the Show.

Another legendary French horseman to leave a lasting impression on London audiences is Jean-François Pignon. Best known for his stunning ‘Black and White’ displays, Pignon works entirely at liberty, directing teams of horses without ropes, reins or tack. His performances combine precision, trust and artistry, creating the illusion that horses and human are communicating through instinct alone. The sight of his black and white horses moving in complete harmony around the arena has provided some of the most elegant and visually striking moments in the Show’s history.

The Show has also welcomed respected trainers and educators such as Tristan Tucker, founder of TRT Method. Rather than focusing on spectacle, Tucker’s demonstrations explored horse behaviour, psychology and communication, giving audiences a fascinating insight into how trust and understanding can transform the relationship between horse and rider. His appearances highlighted the educational role the Show continues to play alongside its world-class sport and entertainment. Following the move to Excel London in 2021, audiences were introduced to the artistry of Santi Serra, the internationally renowned Spanish horseman known for his liberty work. Performing with Arabian horses and dogs, Serra demonstrated a different side of horsemanship, relying on subtle communication, body language and trust rather than traditional tack or equipment. His displays showcased the extraordinary relationships that can be developed between humans and animals through patience and understanding.

London International Horse Show has also long celebrated Britain’s equestrian heritage through displays from organisations such as the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch. The Household Cavalry’s Musical Ride, featuring mounted soldiers from one of the British Army’s oldest regiments, demonstrates precision riding, discipline and ceremonial tradition. In addition, displays from the Metropolitan Police have provided fascinating insight into the important role horses continue to play in modern policing, public order and community engagement – offering a rare opportunity for visitors from far and wide to experience this quintessentially British tradition.

International military displays have also played an important role in London International Horse Show’s history. One of the most impressive examples has been The Garde Républicaine, the elite mounted ceremonial unit of the French National Gendarmerie. Their musical displays combine intricate formations, immaculate turnout and military precision, showcasing centuries of French cavalry tradition. Their appearances have offered visitors a rare opportunity to witness one of the world’s most prestigious mounted units perform outside France.

Beyond horsemanship alone, the Show has frequently used its arena to celebrate the horse’s place within the wider cultural landscape. One particularly memorable example was the appearance of the National Theatre’s War Horse puppets, Joey and Topthorn. Bringing these iconic creations into the arena created a powerful connection between equestrian heritage and one of Britain’s most acclaimed theatrical productions, reminding audiences of the enduring bond between humans and horses and the important role they have played throughout history.

Alongside these special displays, the Show is home to two much-loved attractions that have become traditions in their own right. The Shetland Pony Grand National has entertained generations of spectators with its fast-paced races featuring young jockeys and determined ponies, becoming one of the most eagerly anticipated moments of every Show.

Equally popular is the Royal Kennel Club Dog Agility, where top canine athletes demonstrate their speed, precision and agility over challenging courses. While very different from the equestrian action in the arena, both attractions embody the Show’s family-friendly atmosphere and ensure there is something to captivate visitors of all ages.

These displays have become a defining feature of the Show’s identity, celebrating the history, heritage and versatility of the horse while introducing audiences to disciplines, careers and traditions they may never otherwise encounter. Combined with world-class sport, they create an experience that is uniquely London International Horse Show.
